Description
In 1908, José María Usandizaga composed his Fantasia for Cello and Piano. After his death in 1915, the piece was orchestrated by his brother Ramón and premiered in this version in 1920. The composer takes full advantage of the freedom offered by a fantasia to include, in two movements (Grave Andante and Allegro), passages of majestic solemnity filled with life and passion, as well as phrases of impetuosity and brilliant virtuosity. These are seamlessly connected to the initial gravity, with which they alternate at times.
The cello shines throughout the work, showcasing its full range, from the deepest registers to the highest, creating a captivating atmosphere of tension and grandeur.
