Belatzarena, one of the author’s earliest works, is an arrangement based on a traditional melody collected by Jose Inazio Ansorena in his book Euskal Kantuak. It is part of the Basque tradition of melodies whistled by shepherds while tending their flocks. Originally written for equal voices (SSA), there is also a version for mixed choir (SATB).
