With more than 400 pieces of work to his name, Tomas Aragues has been awarded several national and international prizes. He is a composer who moves through different musical tendencies yet always reserving his own personal independence.
He was born in 1935 in Albalete del Arzobispo (Teruel) into a traditionally musical family and five years later moved to the Basque Country. He first studied at the Musical Conservatory of Bilbao and then at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana de Siena where he began to work on atonal composition with Goffredo Petrassi. He combines his work as a composer and religious music teacher at the Universidad Pontificia in Salamanca and at the Conservatory of Music in San Sebastian with that of choir and orchestra conductor. He is also head of the Baroque Foundation Group in San Sebastian and director of the Easo choir. He has worked with the EUSKADI SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA on various occasions.
Apart from religious choir music, Tomas Aragues also offers within his musical production a great variety of secular choir music, especially on Basque themes and instrumental pieces of which I would highlight his Concert for Txistu and Orchestra.
CM Ediciones Musicales S.L will publish his “Modal Quartet” which premiered at the San Sebastian Musical Fortnight in 1989.
