Jesús Guridi

Vitoria, Alava 1886-1961

Acknowledged by many as the most outstanding Basque composer of the 20th century, Jesús Guridi was educated in Bilbao, Madrid, Paris (Schola Cantorum with Vincent d’Indy), Brussels and Cologne.

He belonged to the group of composers known as the Generation of Falla, along with Conrado del Campo, Joaquín Turina, Julio Gómez and Oscar Esplá. At the beginning of the 20th century, they helped to lay the foundations of a Spanish symphony, almost nonexistent at that time, but which would soon find its place within the great International symphonic stream.

Away from the avant-garde of the time, his style of composition united symphonic romanticism with Basque musical nationalism.

His substantial and varied catalogue of operas, traditional Spanish operettas, symphonies, chamber music, choral music, songs, childrens’ songs and soundtracks for movies, is a token of the quality and knowledge of this composer.

CM is publishing his 2nd String Quartet in minor, composed in 1949 and dedicated to Juan Antonio Ruiz Casaux.
