Esteban Sanz Vélez

Maracaibo, Venezuela 1960

Composer, conductor and researcher. Graduated in piano, composition and orchestra conducting at the ‘Real Conservatorio Superior de Música’ (Madrid), where he studied with García Abril, Alís, García Asensio, Ros Marbá, Ceccato, Rillyng, Schmidt, etc.

He has been awarded with many prizes as the First Prize Maestro Guerrero, First Prize of Composition Manuel Valcárcel, Fifth Platform of Young Composers of the March Foundation, Second View of Young Composers of the ONE, Coralia Prize, etc, and he has received orders from the ‘Festival Internacional de Santander’, ‘Fundación Botín’, ‘Certamen de la Canción Marinera’, ‘Primaveras musicales’ (Laredo), ‘Certamen Coral de Ejea de los Caballeros’, etc.

He is the founder conductor of the ‘Coro Lírico de Cantabria/Coro de las Temporadas Líricas del Palacio de Festivales de Santander’, choral group which he conducted between 1996 and 2010.

He usually provides courses of choral conducting (‘Universidad de Cantabria’, etc.) and he is required to serve as member of the jury in international interpretation and composition contests.

He has been coordinator of the Documentation and Research of Music in Cantabria Centre (CDIMC), of the Botín Foundation, and he is now acting as the music and education consultant of this institution.

He has published many musicological works, between them we can emphasizes ‘Antología Coral Cántabra’ (2003) and ‘Repertorio coral popular de Cantabria’ (2010).
