Bernardo Atxaga is the pseudonym used by José Irazu Garmendia to publish his literary work. He is probably the most well known and widely read Basque author of all time.
He studied at La Salle High School in San Sebastian and graduated from the University of Bilbao with a degree in Economic Science. From 1981 to 1984, he studied Philosophy at the Central University in Barcelona.
He worked as an economist, Basque Language teacher, bookseller, printer, script-writer for radio etc;…. Until in 1980, he decided to dedicate himself exclusively to his literary work.
Bernardo Atxaga writes in Euskera and normally translates his work into Spanish himself. His books have been translated into more than twenty languages.
