Andrew J. P. Keelan

Liverpool (UK) 1980

Born in Liverpool, at a young age he studied piano and violin, and was the organist in his local church. He also sang in a local youth choir and played violin in the borough youth orchestra, later performing as first violin.

In 2003 he moved to the Basque Country, since when he has sung with several choirs, including the prize-winning ensemble, KUP Taldea.

After being given the opportunity to take part in the Basque Country Choral Federation Conducting courses, from 2004-2010 he conducted an amateur choir in Irun, Kabigorri Abesbatza. A few years later, he had the chance to conduct a local female-voice ensemble, Náyade Abesbatza, participating in many concerts, including at the 2019 Sacred Music Festival in Hondarribia.

As a composer he has won various prizes: 2nd prize in the 2008 Biscay Choral Association Composition Competition, 3rd prize in the 2018 edition and 2nd prize in the 2020 edition. He has written original works and arrangements for choir, solo singer, piano and string ensembles. Among these works there features a Basque-language mass for female-voice choir and piano, the “Mass in Honour of Saint Cecilia.” Finally, he has arranged various folk songs and original works of the Basque folk group Kalakan, including an arrangement of a traditional song which appeared on their album “Artizar,” and pieces to be performed live with a choir.
